Differential Hormetic Response of Fenoxaprop-p-Ethyl Resistant and Susceptible Phalaris minor Populations: a Potential Factor in Resistance Evolution Planta Daninha
FAROOQ,N.; ABBAS,T.; TANVEER,A.; JAVAID,M.M.; ALI,H.H.; SAFDAR,M.E.; KHAN,A.; ZOHAIB,A.; SHAHZAD,B..
ABSTRACT: Resistance evolution in weeds against all major herbicide groups demand investigations to identify various factors responsible for resistance development. Herbicide hormesis has not yet been included in the list of factors promoting the evolution of resistance. Studies were conducted to evaluate the degree of hormesis in fenoxaprop-p-ethyl susceptible and resistant Phalaris minor to provide a first indication of whether hormesis is a potential factor in the development of resistance. In the first experiment, a wide range of doses up to 160% of the recommended field rate was used to identify potential hormetic doses for resistant and susceptible P. minor populations. Doses below 40% have been designated as potential hormetic doses. In the second...

Herbicidal Activity of Aspergillus niger Metabolites Against Parthenium Weed Planta Daninha
BASHIR,U.; KHAN,A.; JAVAID,A..
ABSTRACT: Metabolites of Aspergillus niger, prepared in malt extract (ME) broth and potato dextrose (PD) broth, were evaluated for their herbicidal activity against a noxious parthenium weed (Parthenium hysterophorus). In laboratory assays, original (X) and diluted (½ X) fungal metabolites significantly reduced germination and seedling growth of weed. However, metabolites prepared in ME broth proved to have greater herbicidal activity than metabolites prepared in other growth medium. Original metabolites prepared in ME broth have completely hinder the germination of parthenium seeds; while those prepared in PD broth have reduced germination by 89% over control. In pot trials, one-week, two-week and three-week-old parthenium seedlings were sprayed three...
